If you want to make a wooden crate for your pet, follow the steps below in how to build a wooden dog crate using a Dremel 4000:

  • Determine the size of the crate. This will depend on the size of your dog. If your dog is still a puppy, remember he won’t be a puppy for long so measure for the full size of your dog breed, with enough room for his food bowls and toys. You don’t want to makes your dog feel like a prisoner so ensure there is enough room for him to move around comfortably .
  • Think of the height too as you want to make sure that your dog has enough head room too.
  • Roughly sketch out your design on some paper and apply your measurements to scale if possible as this will allow you to see it more realistically.
  • If you have used cardboard as your template material you can use the cutting attachment on your dremel 4000 to accurately cut the template.
  • Attach the saw cutting blade to your rotary tool and cut the wood according to the size that you measured. You can use ply wood for this. If your measurements are 24 x 32 inches, then make it into 25 ½ by 33 ½ inches. Again, this will give your dog the extra space required in the pen. Also, you will need extra space to nail into so this can be used for that.
  • Hold the dremel 4000 firmly to the marked area on you wood and using a very slow forward movement allow the rotary tool to cut the wood at it’s own pace. Do not try and force it.
  • When all of your pieces are cut out, you can start attaching the boards and the end pieces together. Nail the plywood through the pine and then into the plywood for about one nail per 4”. If you find that some of the wood is not a perfect fit, change to the sanding attachment on the dremel 4000 and sand down the incorrect pieces.
  • Using a measuring device, measure the spaces between the pine boards with the side pieces. The pieces should fit perfectly.
  • Now, you can attach the base of the crate with the end pieces. If you need extra help for this, you might want to ask some assistance from a friend. You will need someone to hold the crate while you are attaching the base of it. Nail into the plywood and around the pine boards.
  • Attach the back and front pieces. Again if there are areas that sit proud use your dremel 4000 to smooth them off.
  • After that, you can attach the hinges for the doors of the crate. Change the Dremel 4000 attachment to the appropriate screw head type and use to fit the screws. Again, make sure that the door will be wide enough for your dog to come in and out of the crate.

Finally go around all the corners with your dremel 4000 rotary tool to smooth off any rough edges.
